  1. Ray Barretto's Latin/soul crossover record of , Acid includes a few tracks of his ebullient, instrumental salsa, but also plays off the boogaloo craze of the past few years with a few Latin soul numbers. The crossovers "A Deeper Shade of Soul," "Soul Drummers," and "Teacher of Love" (all written by Barretto himself) are a lot of fun, but the (relatively) straight-ahead salsa of "El Nuevo.

  6. Nov 01,  · Ol' Hard Hands they call him, and if you'd beaten the congas for more than 50 years you'd have tough paws too. Homage to Art Blakey is the year-old's latest CD, and it honors the man who helped give Ray Barretto his start in the jazz business. Jesse "Chuy" Varela fills us in on this master of jazz-Latin (yes, not Latin jazz-you'll see).
  7. Most of the songs on this cd are classic Barretto cuts from the 70's. Some of the standouts on this cd are "El hijo de Obatala" and "Indestructible," which feature Tito Allen on lead vocals. My biggest disappointment was the fact that one of my all-time favorite soneros Adalberto Santiago puts up a lowsy performance throughout the album/5(9).
  8. The album is by no means bad, "Indestructible" kind of disappointed me though. Is it short on tracks (6)? Yes. So if you want a truly great LIVE performance by Barretto, I recommend his 50th anniversary album, a 2 CD set which was OUTSTANDING in every sense (sound, performance.) Plus it has Blades and Ray de la Paz along with Allen and Santiago/5(4).
